What is a Medical Physics?
Medical physics consists of “Medical” and “Physics”. So, Medical physics is a branch of science that deals with the medical fields that takes the bits of help of physics.
In medical physics, you will help doctors derive the best possible information from medical images like X-Ray, CT Scans, and MRIs. You will also ensure that the equipment works correctly to its top performance.
So, after you study medical physics, you become a medical physicist and involve patient care, along with the research of the latest, new medical technologies and teaching in the field.
As a Medical physicist, you can be employed in clinical along with non-clinical fields, including clinics, academia, government, and industry sectors.
In medical physics generally, there are five sub-specialities of medical physics:
- Therapeutic Medical Physics
- Diagnostic Medical Physics
- Nuclear Medical Physics
- Medical Health Physics
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics
Therapeutic Medical Physics
Therapeutic medical physicists, working mainly on cancer treatment, develop new radiation treatment technology (e.g. intensity-modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiation therapy), collaborate with radiation oncologists, and monitor equipment to ensure each patient’s safety.
Diagnostic Medical Physics
Nuclear Medical Physics
Nuclear medical physicists develop and monitor the use of radionuclides for imaging (e.g. PET imaging).
Medical Health Physics
Medical health physicists monitor the use of radiation to protect non-patients (e.g. nurses, doctors, visitors, everyone but the person being treated with radiation).
What are the Requirements for Medical Physics?

If you come from a background in mathematics, physics, engineering or similar related sciences, then you can be eligible for medical physics and apply it.
Many opportunities are available after graduation with the Master of Science in Medical Physics. With a medical physics degree, students can pursue certification through the American Board of Radiology in the following specialities: Therapeutic Medical Physics, Diagnostic Medical Physics, or Nuclear Medical Physics.
Some students are interested in health physics and pursue certification through the American Board of Health Physics. The MPGP program gives students a general overview of all specialities through coursework, labs, and professional development seminars.
Students are involved in more hands-on clinical and research activities through clinical practicum, thesis research, and employment in the clinic. We have to advise conversations with students to understand their career interests better.
